Manuel to me there’s plenty thinking like this was our one and only chance (72 clubs don’t get a sniff at anything major season in season out throughout their lifetimes)…..move on and maybe think more along the lines of it was a chance too soon seeing as our manager has stated he has had a long term strategy for us from the get-go…..we are still in the shorterm under his second spell……

Outed as what?

I’m a football fan, and remembering a major cup final from last season is pretty basic stuff.

Only a spurs fan would care to remember that.

League Cup final last season.

Re: Rangers v Frankfurt
I think Rangers were more physical than Frankfurt and we were against them especially in the first leg. Rangers played it cagey and stopped them mostly playing their normal game, didn't make any stupid mistakes. Cresswell gifted it to them. I think we definitely would have beaten Rangers, they offer nothing of any significance going forward.

Fucking hell, I’ll take being Spursy if that’s challenging for the top 4 and trophies.

Being West Hamsy must be battling relegation every other season.

Re: Rangers v Frankfurt
agreed with last two posts, but also think there has to be a balance.
In truth, we've been a bit Spursy. We were 4th with 6 games left last season and didn't get it done, didn't turn up in the semi final in Europe and haven't got over the line in a number of important, and simple, home games. Easy to point to small squad, and 'tiredness', but we didn't look especially 'tired' to me on Sunday (and before anyone says they had a full weeks rest, most of the team had a full ten days rest before the two Frankfurt games because we tanked the league games against Arsenal & Chelsea).

That's not intended as a criticism, this group have achieved really good things, but if you're not honest about where you've come up short, you're just going to repeat the same thing over & over.

Manuel 4:59 Thu May 19
Re: Rangers v Frankfurt
Side - A bit of an overdramatic 'voice of reason' type of post. Some are just saying it was a huge chance gone which may not come around again for a very long time, nowt wrong with that, and probably true as well. But yea of course you have to move on at some point and this summer is the time to do that and no doubt folk will. It's fairly obvious that this has come up again as this is a thread about the final, played just last night, so of course it would.

Re: Rangers v Frankfurt
We played poorly in both Frankfurt games and deservedly got knocked out.
If that had happened in the round of 16 it would have been disappointing & frustrating but given it happened after beating superior teams in Sevilla & Lyon it becomes doubly so.
Especially with a final v Rangers on offer.

We need to move on, get on with buying the players we need , improve and go again next season. Whether thats the EL or E Conference we have to think that those are winnable if we improve in the summer.

Re: Rangers v Frankfurt
I think we have to move on like the team is trying to do as well (me included) as comments about it being 46 years before the next European Semi Final is all a bit 'woe is me' which we are not really in a position to fully justify. We have in actual fact spent the best part of 40 years competing against the top 20 clubs in the country (not necessarily well I add, but there on the fixture list all the same) this is in football terms a charmed existence when you consider the amount of clubs and their struggles to even get a following of any note and they are the real 'supporters' where it would really be difficult to turn up week in week out.

We need to start appreciating our position but at the same time very much look towards a positive outlook towards the fact it could be so much better if run properly and priority was towards the football and it's level of playing staff quality.

We spend far too much time bemoaning our luck and blaming individuals rather than looking at where we shop for our products, which gets you the 'blue chip brand' kind of luck.......

Re: Rangers v Frankfurt

I get your point there, stewie, but two things:

1) no tie is won in the first leg if it's only a one goal lead (even a scrappy set piece goal alone could have seen us to penalties)

6 teams in European finals this year. Every single one of them won the home leg.

Not you - as you're one of the most reasonable on here - but all seems to be a continuation of the bizarre narrative ahead of the second leg that we were somehow favourites. So much bollocks spoken in advance of that second leg. We tanked the home leg.
We created pretty much fuck all, and got beaten by the better side on the night.
Repeated claims that we created chances and were unlucky with the woodwork.
We created one chance, where Bowen hit the post and was unlucky. They created several.
I've been watching Benrahma for over a year, he's had about 500 shots from 25 yards and precisely none have gone in without the aid of a deflection. It wasn't unlucky to hit the woodwork, it was lucky to be within a 10 metre radius of the goal.
And Bowen's overhead kick was a quarter of a chance at best. If we're calling those chances, we're depserpately clutching at straws.

Re: Rangers v Frankfurt
Lily - Yep, wouldn't disagree. Just the 'learn from it' has always been a bugbear of mine when it's such a big game, you use to hear it when England got knocked out the world cup 'we'll learn from this' they would say, what so just wait another 4 years to possibly learn from it and we probably won't anyway. Massive, once in a generation games, are not for learning from.

Crossed - We'd be one of the favourites and should go deep into the thing, but there will be some handy sides knocking about.

Lily Hammer 3:48 Thu May 19
Re: Rangers v Frankfurt
We’ll be back sooner than 46 years. It took Moyes years to gradually progress Everton into Euro spots and longer still to get into the top four.

Personally, I think we overachieved and got so far into the EL too soon.

If Moyes gets to add the players he really wants, (a big if, I know), we’ll be back before long.

Re: Rangers v Frankfurt
Manuel,

Leicester ended up in the Conference League and got to the semis without hardly any effort.

There’s a real possibility that we could waltz through it and win the whole thing at a canter, which is why I’m not overly bothered if we miss out on 6th place on Sunday.

Let’s just hope Cresswell has been replaced before then, and the fans actually make a decent atmosphere in the home game.

Yea, right, so we don't repeat it again in the next European semi final in 46 years!

Lily Hammer 3:11 Thu May 19
Re: Rangers v Frankfurt
If you go back and watch the incident, everyone was up in the box because we had a throw in level with their area, so we were treating like a set piece, with the big lads in the area.

Problem was Coufal threw the ball way too hard, over our players and straight into the keeper’s hands; easy catch. Nobody pressured him to slow him down, so he could launch a measured hoof upfield, which I think was a practiced routine, because Hauge knew to be on the sprint immediately, catching Cresswell a bit flat footed, which always had him losing the race back.

So Cresswell being alone was a risk, Coufal’s throw in was gifted to the keeper, and we were naive not to block the keeper from making a quick pass.

The “blame” is on more than one player, and all I can hope is that we have learnt from the experience.
